Reauthorize a Credit Card Transaction

Expand/Collapse item  Overview

In some cases you may want to perform a second pre-authorization for a credit card transaction. Some reasons for reauthorizing are if the authorized amount is significantly increased, or if a significant amount of time has elapsed before the post-authorization is processed, and you want additional assurance that the funds are available.

Note You do not necessarily need to perform a second pre-authorization because the original one has expired.

In Sales Order Entry and S/O Invoice Data Entry, a message appears indicating that the credit card pre-authorization transaction has expired if 7 days have elapsed since the pre-authorization occurred. The expiration message does not necessarily mean that the post-authorization transaction will be declined.

When you process the post-authorization transaction, Sage 100 will process it as if the pre-authorization has not expired. At that point, the post-authorization may be successful.

If the post-authorization is not successful, Sage 100 automatically attempts to process a sale transaction, which combines both a pre- and post-authorization transaction. This sale transaction may be successful, even if the post-authorization attempt was not successful.

Note Attempting a post-authorization, even if the pre-authorization has expired, may help you avoid additional transaction fees. You will be charged a second pre-authorization fee only if the post-authorization fails, at which point the sale transaction described above is processed.

Warning There is no way to void the original pre-authorization. The time period in which the original pre-authorization amount counts against the card holder's credit limit varies by credit card issuer. If you attempt a second pre-authorization transaction, it is possible that the amount from both the original pre-authorization and the second one will count against the credit limit, which may cause the second attempt to fail.

Follow this procedure when you need to perform a second pre-authorization for a credit card transaction.
