Use the Commodity Code Import Wizard to import a tab-delimited text file with a list of commodity codes and descriptions. You can create the import file using a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets.
The Commodity Code Import Wizard guides you through the import process. If one or more commodity codes have already been imported or entered in Commodity Code Maintenance, you will have the option to add to the existing codes, remove the existing codes and add the new ones, or add the new ones and update any description changes for the existing ones.
In your spreadsheet program, enter your commodity codes in column A and the descriptions in column B.
Or if you already have a spreadsheet with the commodity codes and descriptions in different columns, use the first row as a header row, and enter the following descriptions for the applicable columns:
Code
Description
Save the file as a tab-delimited text file. This process varies based on the program you are using.
In Excel, select File > Save As. In the Save As window, select Text (Tab delimited) in the Save as type list.
In Google Sheets, select File > Download as > Tab-separated values. The file will then be saved with a .tsv extension. Rename the file to use a .txt extension.
The file is ready to import.
Select Common Information Utilities menu > Commodity Code Import.
- Proceed through the steps in the Wizard to import the commodity codes.
After importing the codes, you can view and edit them in Commodity Code Maintenance, and assign them to items in Miscellaneous Item Maintenance and Item Maintenance.
