Maintaining Existing Work Orders

Use Work Order Entry to make changes to a work order after it has been created. The extent of the changes allowed depends on whether the work order status is "firm planned" or "released." Only the work order memo information can be changed for a closed work order.

Before a work order is released, you can modify or delete the entire work order without any restriction. An unreleased work order (for example, a firm-planned work order) represents the work that is planned to be performed but has not been released to the shop for processing. Before any cost transactions can be recorded for a work order, you must first release the work order by selecting the Release transaction type in the Work Order Transaction Entry window before cost transactions can be recorded.

After a work order is released, you cannot delete operation steps or material lines because activity may have been performed against those entries but not recorded. You can "zero out" or modify the remaining planned quantities on existing operations or material lines, and you can add new operation steps and material without restriction.

To delete a work order, you must either close or complete the work order by recording the appropriate transaction in Work Order Transaction Entry. You can close a work order with a zero quantity completed to indicate a cancelled order. The system posts any costs that are accumulated on the work order to scrap.

Note Closed work orders remain in Work Order Entry until Work Order Purge is performed.
