Device Code

Enter the device code to be identified with this printer, or click the Lookup button to list all currently defined printers. Device Configurator uses a device code to refer to a specific hardware device (for example, a workstation or printer). Device codes must start with a "P" and can be followed by one or two additional characters. The devices "PD" and "PF" are reserved for Deferred Print and Print to File, respectively.

Three default printing devices are automatically defined.

  • Select PW to use the default Windows printer and rely on the Windows Print Manager for all control code sequences.

  • Select PR to use the default Windows printer but allow the user to enter control code sequences to be passed through the Windows Print Manager to the printer. The control codes set up by default are for the HP LaserJet printer.

Note If you select PR, you must verify that it is defined to use the correct driver code for your specific Windows printer.

  • Select LP to use an HP LaserJet printing to LPT1.

You can also define specific Windows printers for use with character-based modules using the Device Configurator and create a printer with the device name of Windows Printer Port (*WINDEV*).

Device Type

Select the type of device to define for this printer.

  • Select Windows Printer to print directly to the Windows Print Manager. This option is used by character-based applications to print to a device defined by the Windows Print Manager.

  • Select Windows Printer Port to print directly to a printer passing through the Windows Print Manager. This device allows reports to be defined using the Modes values maintained in the Device Configurator for all printer formatting. The print driver selected must support pass-through printing. If the driver for the printer selected does not support pass-through printing, create a Generic printer for which to print. All driver codes are defined in the Device Configurator and the codes from the Windows Print Manager are ignored.

  • Select Physical Device to print directly to a port, such as LPT1, LPT2, etc. Note that Windows NT Workstations will not be able to print to this device.

Device Name

Enter the name of the printer to which you want to print.

  • If Windows Printer or Windows Printer Port is selected in the Device Type field, select a printer from the list. Select Windows Default Printer to always use the Windows Default Printer as defined through the Windows Print Manager.

  • If Physical Device is selected in the Device Type field, type in the physical port to which you want to print.

Driver Code

Enter the printer driver code to use, or click the Lookup button to list all driver codes. This field is available only if Windows Printer Port or Physical Port is selected in the Device Type field. If Windows Printer is selected in the Device Type field, the software will use the drivers defined in the Windows Print Manager.
