About the Data Dictionary

The Data Dictionary defines how data files are organized within the modules. Each data file contains several data items. Each data item, in turn, contains data item detail. Using the Data Dictionary structure, you can specify which data items will be imported into or exported from the data files.

You must use the information contained in the Data Dictionary to determine the data file and specific data fields into which you will import data. Before you can effectively define a Visual Integrator import function, it is vital that you understand all information contained in the Data Dictionary.

The Data Dictionary Listing lists all data files and data items contained within each data file in the Data Dictionary, including runtime fields. In addition, import validation and report type options are available on the report. Before you attempt to define an import function, print the Data Dictionary Listing for all modules into which you will be importing data.

Note The Data Dictionary Listing contains information only for the Material Requirements Planning and Work Order modules. To view and print information for all modules, click the File Layout and Program Information link on the Desktop's Resources page.

The information in the listing helps to ensure that all of the necessary data files and data items contained in the destination file are also contained in your import file. Refer to the information on the Data Dictionary Listing while defining the import function to eliminate any problems that can occur as the result of mismatched data fields or data items.
