The Visual Integrator module is designed to operate in the client/server environment to import and export data from both the server (host) system and the client (workstation) system; however, certain restrictions apply with some file types (see Restrictions below).
When importing or exporting a file, you can specify whether the source or target file resides on the server (host) system or the client (workstation) system.
If the source or target file resides on the server (host) system, select the On Host check box on the Import Job Maintenance Configuration tab. The path name that you enter is based on the server system. Use the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) if you are not sure of the drive mapping on the host system (for example, \\MAIN\DATA). The access security established for the Host program determines whether you have permission to access the specified file.
If the source or target file resides on the local workstation, or if you want to access a folder mapped to the local system, ensure that the On Host check box is cleared. The path name that you enter will be based on the local system mapping. The access security will be based on the user that logged onto the workstation.
You can use an ODBC data source created on the server (host) system in a way similar to that of accessing a file on the server. To select a data source from the server, select the On Host check box in the Data Source field on the Import Job Maintenance Configuration tab. The Data Source drop box will list all available data sources from the server.
If the client/server software is configured as a service on the host system, you will only have access to System DSNs. If it is not configured as a service, you will have access to both User DSNs and System DSNs.
Due to certain technical limitations, the following restrictions apply when using the Visual Integrator module in a client/server environment.
You can only perform the job definition import and export on the server system.
You cannot import from dBASE, Excel, and Lotus files on the local system; you must first move these files to a folder accessible from the server system.
