Expand/Collapse item  Overview

Selecting the data file into which data will be imported or from which data will be exported is the most important decision you must make when designing an import or export function. This decision is especially important because this file cannot be changed after you have defined the import or export function.

To select the destination file or source file, you must decide which data file contains the data fields into which new data will be imported, or from which data will be exported. You must also determine whether the information you are importing or exporting represents historical, constant, or transaction data. For more information about historical and transaction data, see Importing Historical and Constant Data and Importing Transaction Data.

To determine the destination file or source file

  1. Access the listing of data files for the module using one of the following methods:

  2. For modules other than Material Requirements Planning and Work Order, click the File Layout and Program Information link on the Desktop's Resources page to print the File Layout and Program Information listing.

  3. For the Material Requirements Planning and Work Order modules, select Visual Integrator Main menu > Data Dictionary Listing. You can also click the File Layout and Program Information link on the Desktop's Resources page to print the File Layout and Program Information listing.

  1. Print the Data Dictionary Listing or the File Layout and Program Information for the module for which data will be imported or exported. The listings provide a list of data files for each module. All data items contained in each data file are also listed. Compare this information to the data you want to import or export to determine which file to use.

You can now enter the file name for the correct destination file or source file on the Import Job Maintenance or Export Job Maintenance Configuration tab.
