The Data View grid must contain at least one numeric column for you to view chart data on the Chart tab.

To create a chart from the data in the Data View grid

  1. Select Business Insights Explorer menu, and then select a view.

  2. In the Business Insights Explorer window, click the Chart tab.

  3. In the Chart Title field, type the title of the chart. The title entered is displayed above the chart.

  4. In the Chart Type field, select the format for the chart, such as bar, line, area, or pie.

  5. In the Data Points per Page field, select the number to display on the horizontal axis of the chart without scrolling. You can enter a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 24 data points per page.

  6. If Bar, Line, or Area is selected in the Chart Type field, one or more data points can be displayed on the chart. If the number of data points exceeds the value entered in this field, the scroll bar at the bottom of the window is enabled for horizontal scrolling.

  • If Pie is selected in the Chart Type field, this setting defines the number of pie slices to display. If the number of series elements is greater than the number entered in this field, an additional slice titled "All other" is used to display the combined total of the remaining elements. When multiple series are selected, each series is displayed as a slice in the pie. The Data Points per Page field setting has no effect in this mode.

  1. Select the 3D Chart check box to represent that chart in three-dimensional format. Clear this check box to represent the chart in two-dimensional format.

  2. In the Series field, select the check box for any column of numeric data from the Data View grid to present in the chart. All numeric columns from the Data View grid are listed even if they are hidden from the Data View grid.

  3. In the Group By field, select the column by which to total the series values selected in the Series field. For example, if the Dollars Sold column is used as a series, and the Division column is used to group by, the chart would display the total amount of dollars sold for each division.

If you selected Pie in the Chart Type field, (Totals) is automatically displayed in this field.

  1. In the Sort By field, select the column to use when sorting the chart data points. The columns available in this field are determined by the Group By setting in addition to any column selected in the Series field.

  2. Select the Sort Ascending check box to sort the order of the chart values in ascending order. Clear this check box to sort the order of the chart values in descending order.

Note To view all the data on a chart, you may need to scroll horizontally if the number of data points exceeds the value entered in the Data Points per Page field.

The data from the Data View grid is represented in chart format. You can copy the chart by right-clicking, and then selecting Copy. The chart is sent to the Windows Clipboard where you can paste the chart into another application, such as Word or Paint.

You can also print or preview the chart by selecting Print or Print Preview from the File menu. To send the chart by e-mail, select File menu > Send Page by E-Mail. The chart is automatically attached to the e-mail in .jpeg format.
