Defining Form Standards

Note This topic applies only to printing in the Material Requirements Planning and Work Order modules.

The following are definitions for the matrix.

Form Length (actual physical length of paper being used)

Continuous-feed forms (for example, dot-matrix printers) in DOS or Windows: Most forms print 6 lines per inch. If you are using 8.5- x 11-inch forms or paper, 66 lines is the form length (6 lines/inch x 11 inches = 66 lines).

Noncontinuous-feed forms (for example, laser, ink-jet, thermal, or other page printers) in Windows: In addition to the continuous-feed form rules shown above, the Windows printer driver accounts for the unprintable area at the top and bottom of the page in form length considerations. As a result, several lines must be subtracted from the form length. For most printers, 63 lines are optimal. Some printers may require a lower value if the Windows printer driver margin settings have higher top or bottom margins.

Lines/Page

This setting indicates the physical number of lines the printer can support for the paper being used. The default lines-per-page value is 60 when setting up a new device in Device Configurator.

Because there are 66 total lines for the paper length, an assumption is made allowing for 3 lines for the top margin and 3 lines for the bottom margin, resulting in a printable area of 60 lines per page. Most printers can support more than 60 printable lines; however, 60 lines is optimal for most printers. Specifying a value too high may not provide enough "white space" at the bottom of the print job.

If you are using 8.5- x 7-inch standard stub-check or check-stub forms, use a lines-per-page setting of 42.

If Physical Device is selected in the Device Type field in Device Configurator, the Auto check box is unavailable. If Windows Printer is selected in the Device Type field and the Auto check box is selected, the Lines/Page field setting is unavailable. If this occurs, the number of lines from the Windows printer driver selected at the Driver Code field setting in Device Configurator is used automatically.

Top Margin

Windows Page Printer (for example, laser, ink-jet or thermal): This setting applies to the unprintable area at the top of the page in Windows. Use the 350 (thousandths of an inch) default setting; this is the optimal setting in most cases.

DOS Printer (Device Type = Physical Device): This configuration is set using the Modes feature in Device Configurator.
