The following list shows examples of commonly used filing status codes.

The A filing status code is used by states with only one filing status.

Married Filing Joint

Some states use MJ1 and MJ2 to distinguish between employees claiming 0 or 1 exemptions and those claiming two or more.

Single

Some states use S1 and S2 to distinguish between employees claiming 0 or 1 exemptions and those claiming two or more.

 

Some tax jurisdictions require special procedures for allowing personal and dependent exemptions.

To enter employee withholding allowances, use the Personal Exemptions field to enter actual "people" exemptions, and the Dependent Exemptions field to enter applicable tax credits in the Tax Status window, which is accessed from the Employee Maintenance Wages tab.

Connecticut uses Exemption and Credit Percentage tax tables. To correctly implement these tables, you must assign filing status A, B, C, or D to each employee in the Tax Status window, which is accessed from the Employee Maintenance Wages tab.

For all filing statuses: No more than two exemption allowances should be entered as personal exemptions. All remaining exemptions should be entered as dependent exemptions.

Married Employees Filing Separate: If claiming zero or one exemption, use filing status MS1. If claiming two or more exemptions, use MS2.

Married Employees Filing Jointly: If claiming zero or one exemption, use filing status MJ1. If claiming two or more exemptions, use MJ2.

Single Employees: If claiming zero exemptions, use filing status S. If claiming one exemption, use filing status S1. If claiming two or more exemptions, use S2.
