Using Sales Kits

Expand/Collapse all Show/Hide All

Sales kits are groups of items that are normally sold together. The price of a sales kit usually differs from the total price of the combined items if those items were sold separately. When a sales kit item is ordered or invoiced using the Sales Order module, the item group can be exploded into its individual components. The detail information for each component can be modified using Sales Order Invoice Data Entry or Sales Order Entry to accommodate special kit configurations.

Note To fully utilize the Sales Kit feature, the Sales Order module is required. Transaction Entry does not automatically explode sales kits into their component items.

If you enter a new line item in Sales Order Entry or Sales Order Invoice Data Entry that is a kit type, the setting made at the Explode Kit field in Item Maintenance determines whether or not to explode the kit or to prompt to order the sales kit from stock.

Note In S/O Shipping Data Entry, if a kit is exploded, an alternate item cannot be used for the kit item or the component items. If you replace a kit item with another kit item, you are not prompted to explode the kit. You can replace a bill with another bill that does not have options.

A sales kit must be defined as a specific inventory item. Sales kit inventory items must be defined as kit-type items. Each sales kit can consist of any number of component items and comment lines. Although the price of a sales kit is assigned to the kit itself, the cost of the kit is based on the total cost of all component items.

Because sales kits cannot be components of other sales kits, the Sales Kit feature only supports a single-level assembly. In addition, Transaction Entry cannot be used to explode sales kit components. If you require these features, the Bill of Materials or Sales Order module is required.

The Sales Kit Report indicates that sales kits AB100 and AB200 use the component item SDF108 once per kit. It also indicates that sales kit AB300 uses this component twice for each kit.

Note If the Bill of Materials module is installed, the Sales Kit feature cannot be accessed from Inventory Management. Instead, you must use Bill of Materials Maintenance to maintain sales kits and standard bills.

To fully make use of the benefits of the Sales Kit feature, it is helpful to examine common examples of how sales kits can be used.

Expand/Collapse item  Sales Kit Where-Used Report Example

The Sales Kit Where-Used Report provides a listing of all sales kits using a particular component item. This report is useful to determine if a component can be deleted from inventory, or if a replacement component can be used. You can also use this report to determine which sales kits may need to be repriced due to a change in component costs.

When the Sales Order module is integrated, the sales kit item code(for example, AB100) can be entered in Sales Order Invoice Data Entry or Sales Order Entry when the sales kit is sold. The component items, including any comment lines, can be inserted (exploded) in the order, invoice, or sale. To calculate the total quantities required, the quantities ordered for each kit are multiplied by the quantity per kit for each component.

Example: If five of the sales kits from the previous example are entered, the following lines are inserted in the sales order.

Item No.

The price of the sales kit is determined by the price information established for the sales kit item (for example, item AB100). A price is not associated with the individual component items.

If components are exploded, the cost of goods sold associated with the sales kit is determined by the total cost of all component items. The cost for a component is determined by the costing method used by each item. If the kit item is not exploded, the cost associated with the kit item is used and is determined by the costing method used for the kit item.

The sales information (sales amount and cost of goods sold) for a sales kit is recorded (for example, item AB100). The same transaction is recorded as an issue for each component item. This ensures that the Inventory Sales Analysis report does not double the sales amount associated with sales kits (once for the sales kit item, and again for each component item).
